WINTERSOUND: 24-26 January 2019 @ Sidney Cooper Gallery

Returning for its third year, the Sidney Cooper Gallery is warmed from its midwinter chill by striking performances and sound installations by local, national and international composers, sound artists and improvisers. This year we celebrate collaborations with Free Range, Canterbury Christ Church University and The Orpheus Institute for Artistic Research In Music, Ghent.

Thursday 24th January, Sidney Cooper Gallery, Canterbury, CT1 2BQ – FREE ENTRY

Heledd Francis Wright opens the evening with a whispering solo flute performance.

Canterbury’s hottest new audiovisual band perform their latest project, Ryoanji.

(Free Range: Garage Coffee @ Fruitworks, 1-2 Jewry Lane, Canterbury CT1 2NR, FREE ENTRY BUT DONATIONS WELCOME)

The evening concludes with a Free Range performance from Trance Map, the duo of internationally-renowned saxophonist Evan Parker and the turntablism/live sampling of Matt Wright. The duo performed at the very first Free Range event back in 2012.

Following tours to Mutek (Montreal) and the London Barbican, sound artist Magz Hall brings her powerful and immersive work to Canterbury.

>>6.30pm – Matthew Herbert

Matthew Herbert, the internationally-renowned composer, producer, electronic musician and Artistic Researcher at CCCU, reads from his latest book The Music, and participates in a Q&A session with Matt Wright.

>>7.15pm – Robert Stillman

Closing the WINTERSOUND weekend, we celebrate with a warm ritual of sound: Mute / Orindal artist Robert Stillman makes saxophone sounds to make Winter melt away!
